Already we have seen some amazing fairs in part one of the blog. But now we travel to New York and Paris to see even more examples of great art and how it is displayed and sold.

The Armory Show

New York is one of the world’s greatest art hubs, and it is a major center both for creating and displaying art, especially modern and contemporary forms. If you want to discover and perhaps even start to collect some of the best art from the 20th & 21st Centuries then The Armory Show is one of the very best places to do so.

This art fair that was initially held in New York back in 1994, not only displays art by well-known contemporary artists but it gives a platform for new and upcoming figures to show their capabilities. The week that the Armory Show takes place also sees off-shoots of fringe events all over New York, and the event is becoming more and more popular every year.

FIAC

FIAC is the acronym for the Foire Internationale d’art Contemporary, which is the premier art fair in Paris. The prestigious locations of the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais, in Europe’s most romantic city just shows how much the Parisians value their art.

The focus on this very esteemed art fair is on contemporary and modern art, and it displays art from all the major galleries from around the world. The exhibition is absolutely steeped in tradition and history, as the prestigious Petit Palais was built in 1900 to host the World’s Fair.

The environment of these two great buildings in the heart of Paris sets the tone to display great modern works of art, in a unique and historical setting. Not only paintings are displayed, there are installations, films, and performance art as well.

Art Dubai

Art Dubai has been called The World’s Most Globally Diverse Art Fair. And the modern futuristic desert city of Dubai plays a big part of the success of this world-famous art fair. Art Dubai features works from all over the world, but its particular focus is that of art from North Africa and the Middle East.

There are four distinct sections to Art Dubai, contemporary, modern, residents and Bawwaba (which are exhibits that have been created especially for Art Dubai).

Scope

We finish our journey around the best international art fairs where we began, in New York. The Scope Art Show is all about giving a platform to new artists to display their works. Although the main fair is in New York, there are spin-off fringe fairs in Basel and Miami Beach.

The contemporary art featured spans many different art mediums, from performance art to installations. There are also many exhibits of more traditional art created by modern artists that show classical art forms have not died and are very much alive and kicking today.

The Best International Art Fairs – Part 1 https://dreamfair.org/the-best-international-art-fairs-part-1/ Wed, 06 Feb 2019 07:50:03 +0000 https://dreamfair.org/?p=6 The recent explosion of art fairs around the world has helped to develop this creative method of expression to become more popular with the general populace. Many ordinary people have found that going to an art gallery is a little bit stuffy and is something for more highbrow folk to do.

The old traditional museums and galleries have to shoulder some of the blame for this, they do behave aloof in their marketing and the way they present art. After all, art is supposed to be for everybody and therefore should be fully accessible to all.

But the art fair helps to break down barriers, it is a place where dealers, collectors and art lovers can all gather in a lively environment to enjoy art, chat, and have a lively experience. There are over two hundred and fifty recognized art fairs held all over the world, displaying all forms of art. Let’s set off on our own art exploration to see some of the best fairs that currently exist.

Art Basel

If you like contemporary art then you should make your way to Switzerland and Basel. Art Basel has grown into possibly the biggest contemporary art festival in the world. Many top art galleries from the major cities gather together to showcase their artists work.

Collectors and art lovers can see fine examples of video art, digital art, sculptures, paintings, and live installations. Since the inaugural Art Basel in 1970 this fair has grown into one of the most respected art fairs in the world.

Frieze Art Fair

Frieze is held both in New York and London, and it is not just about featuring and selling art. At the Frieze Art Fair there are many opportunities to meet the artists, and regular lectures and talks take place by the artists that open up their creative worlds to the visitor.

This art fair is a relative newcomer to the art scene as the first one was not held until 2003. Therefore, it is hardly a surprise that it concentrates on new artists and contemporary works. In 2019 a new location will be added to the Frieze itinerary and that will be Los Angeles.

The European Fine Art Fair

TEFAF is probably better known as the European Fine Art Fair and as the name suggests it showcases the finest art from over two hundred and sixty galleries that are based in twenty countries dotted around Europe and other parts of the world.

TEFAF has been held in Maastricht since 1988 and features work from every era of art history. Although the main exhibition is in the Netherlands, TEFAF also hold two fairs a year in New York, making it a truly global art fair. TEFAF is a little more highbrow than our other art fairs featured and will attract the elite top dealers and art expert from the international art scene. The journey to find the best international art fairs that exist on the planet will continue in part two, where we travel to New York and Paris.
